La TOMATINA

It's big! It's red! It's dirty! It's..... LA TOMATINA

Spain's biggest food fight, held in the streets of Buñol, where dozens of people throw tomatoes at each other until their eyes sting from tomato juice because the goggles you bought didn't work.

Three other girls from NAU and I decided to make the two hour car trip from Alicante to the tiny town of Buñol for this once in a lifetime experience, held at the end of August every year. We woke up in the very early morning (la madrugada we say in Spain) and made our way inland. When we arrived, we were met by crowds of people from all over the world, all there to get the chance to smash a tomato on a strangers head. Beautiful.

The actual tomato fight itself lasted about an hour or so, and let me tell you I still can't eat tomatoes if they look too squishy. Something about having smashed tomato sludge covering your entire body just kind of ruins it for you, which in hindsight is kind of the worst because smashed tomato sludge on toast is a Spanish breakfast favorite.

After the main event, the festivities commence, including lots of paella and sangria, great music, and the chance to meet other people who you may have just pelted with a handful of red goop.

Would I recommend this event? Yes, without a doubt. Would I also recommend bringing along on extra jug of water to rinse of with afterwards, unless you want to wait in line and pay a couple euros to have some friendly locals hose you off outside their house.
